This dog was not afraid of humans so obviously at one time he had a family. He was found by chance, lost amongst the thousands of acres of sugar cane. This Egyptian farming family brought him home and then to AWOL on one of our regular clinics in the village.
Here Dr Mohammed struggles to find a muscle into which to put an injection as he was just all bone. We fitted him with an AWOL red dog collar that we usually use for puppies. |

AWOL visited him every other day with food supplements to build him up as well as giving him medical washes to rid him of fleas, lice and matted fur when we changed the dressings. He was already putting on weight.
Our constant worry were the open wounds that were down to the bone on his hips as if infection got in that would be the final straw for Max.
If you move your cursor over this image you can see why we were worried about infection getting into Max. Move your cursor off and this picture will reappear. |

Pauline removes ticks from Max's ears and has already fitted him with a bespoke bandage under which there was padding where it was needed.
At this time he was still losing his coat and we had to wait for his new coat to come through. |

22nd November 2009
AWOL supporters Sue and Eileen give Max a wash and treatment but as it is so cold at night, at this time of year, they made sure that he was completely dry before fitting his coat. |
 |
Made from an old sweat shirt with ties this kept Max warm in the cold nights of winter in Luxor.
We made two so he could wear one and have one in the wash as now he had much more energy. |

1st December 2009
Eating well and with his new coat growing Max is starting to fill out. He certainly has energy now. |

Doesn't he look like a completely different dog? Dr Mohammed gives him a few Pedigree Gravy Bones that are brought over by supporters, for which we thank them. Max and the other dogs love them and of course they are full of vitamins.
He has grown enough to have his AWOL red dog collar changed to the larger blue one. AWOL supporter Cindy makes them for us in Luxor from locally purchased materials as they are not something that you can buy here. |

What a smile. |

Doesn't he look the picture of health thanks to AWOL, your donation and the Egyptian farming family that he lives with. |

13th September 2011
This is Max just before his coat thickens for the short Luxor winter when the nights are very cold.
We have now fitted him with a really strong dog collar that was brought from the UK by a supporter so that he can be kept safe. |
