Speedy ~ An AWOL Dog case history.

The following is from our AWOL May 2008 Newsletter

Little "Speedy" as he became known was a cute, fluffy puppy when we first saw him with his sister. Though his sister was fine for some unknown reason "Speedy" went downhill fast. The family were very worried and though AWOL visited every other day with Puppy supplements he continued to go downhill. It was when he lost the use of his front legs we took him home, with the family's permission, for intensive treatment.

Regular small, high protein feeds, day and night along with manipulation of the limbs, frequent washes and "Speedy" was soon up and well on his way to full recovery. His body weight doubled in less than 10 days and he would soon be ready to be returned to his family. We kept the family advised of his progress as they missed him and were so pleased to have him back.

Here on a follow up visit by AWOL "Speedy" is seen at home with his, now smaller, sister. AWOL will continue to monitor the progress of "Speedy" as we do with so many other cases to ensure that families that care have easy access to our services.

Speedy ~ Four Months On

AWOL continued to monitor Speedy's progress and we took this picture for the
AWOL September 2008 Newsletter.

Speedy is doing so well and is seen here on the lower step with his sister above. They live in the house with the family and just came out to see what all the commotion was as AWOL dealt with some donkey's nearby. It was lovely to see him and his sister who have both suddenly turned from puppies to dogs.

Speedy ~ One Year On ~ May 2009

Wow just look at Speedy now. A wonderful, full grown, well natured dog that has a caring Egyptian family. You can't judge animal care here by European standards but by any standard Speedy is a success story that just would not have happened without AWOL.

At the end of August 2010 Speedy's family, trying to do their best for him, bought a treatment from a local pharmacy that they were told would kill the ticks on Speedy but it was a poison and not intended for use on dogs. Possibly used diluted it would have just killed the ticks but how they applied it it also killed their Speedy. We can't ask but it is very unlikely that any of the family could read sufficiently to understand the instructions and if they did they would not have found a dosage to use on a dog.

This was a very tragic accident and we have very strongly impressed on all families that before giving any treatment to their dogs or donkeys they must talk to AWOL.
