AWOL Medical Centre El Marise
We start this month with the absolutely excellent news that Animal Welfare of Luxor has land from which to work and on which we can build our medical centre.
It was a funny start to the year as the land we had been trying to get for such a long time suddenly became available but only if we paid for the final signature. We didn't feel comfortable with this and tried to get to the bottom of this quickly. The sheik of El Marise had reservations and so did a few other people and they all need AWOL and want us to be secure there. To cut a long story short a good friend advised us of piece of land, right by one of our regular stopping places, that was possibly going to be sold. We approached the family who owned this land, they are very well respected in El Marise, have the all important "Black Paper" which is absolute proof of single ownership, and a deal was struck.
The picture below, which you might remember from last month's newsletter, is on the road our land is on so we know the families in the area. The land is rectangular in shape and right against this tarmac road with electric and water running across the front so that it should be easy to get connected. The main thing is that the road is mainly used by animals so it is excellent for AWOL. When we stop there we only see one or two cars the whole time we are there. The land is about 100 yards further down the road in the direction of the car. At the moment it is planted with sugar cane which will be harvested anytime now and then we can move on.
What an excellent start to AWOL's New Year.
AWOL Fundraising
We now have to raise the funds to build the AWOL centre and we really appreciate the efforts of all our supporters. Despite two broken fingers AWOL supporter Terry Kilty undertook his sponsored walk from London to Brighton on 25 January.
We have never wanted to leave Luxor but were tempted by Judi Grossman's AWOL Charity Indian Supper at St John's Church, Walmley on the 1st March. A really big thank you to her and two very generous benefactors who are donating and cooking the food. The following month Judi and a friend will be partaking in a sponsored walk around Sutton Park (about 9/10 miles). Do contact Jan if you wish to sponsor or if you are able to raise sponsors for this event.
Jan is arranging a car boot sale and also a Krispy Kreme doughnut sale and along with her daughter Amy is brimming with ideas so if you need any help with fundraising do contact her and she will be pleased to help you so AWOL can help the hardworking animals of the west bank of Luxor.
Sugar Cane Harvest
It is now the time of the sugar cane harvest and the donkeys are working flat out and so is AWOL as we are seeing more and more tack related injuries. Thankfully the AWOL tack and especially head collar replacement scheme has made a great difference to many but we have a long way to go. The purchase of a sewing machine has allowed us to produce head collars much quicker and now we make our own harnesses rather than paying to have them made. We will feature the harvest on our February Newsletter.
Please become part of the team.
