Isn't it amazing what £2.50 can do?
As you know we never want to put upsetting pictures on the AWOL web site and we hope that this is a picture of hope and will cheer and encourage you knowing just how much AWOL is doing thanks to your donation. We saw this donkey outside a very poor home in El Marise on the 23rd May. We stopped and talked to the owner and it was obvious that the owner could see his donkey was becoming very thin so his answer was to try and buy it more food. These are lovely people but they still think in old ways.
After veterinary guidance Pauline talked to him and explained what was wrong and that by a simple treatment his donkey could be well again. He was happy and trusted AWOL to treat his donkey.
We made a point of checking on this donkey every 2 to 3 days and the bottom picture is the same donkey on the 23rd June, exactly one month later, and just look at the improvement. It would have been very difficult for the family to find the 25 Egyptian pounds (just less than £2.50) for the treatment let alone travel to find and pay for a vet to come from Luxor. If you don't already please consider a monthly Standing Order of just £10.
AWOL Summer Ball - 18th July
Book your tickets now for the AWOL Summer Ball at Middleton Hall, near Tamworth in Staffordshire, as it is really going to be a great evening and one that we hope will turn into an annual AWOL event.
If you were at the AWOL Curry evening then you will look forward to Irving as our returning guest speaker. The hot buffet main course is accompanied by warm
home made rustic breads served with olive oil/balsamic vinegar. There will be home made desserts such as pavlova
with fresh fruit, cheesecakes, etc. There is also a charity raffle with some great sporting memorabilia including 2 cricket bats signed by the England team but it is not just sports as there is luxury with champagne and chocolates, silk ties, coffee maker and much, much more. There is also plenty of parking, a reasonably priced bar (and soft drinks for drivers) and a great chance to meet up with like minded people and new friends from all around the country. There will be several very nice surprises throughout the evening.
AWOL visits the new home of the Brooke in Luxor?
Regular visitors to AWOL in Luxor or to the AWOL web site will know that we are all very appreciative of the welcome and assistance that the Brooke has given AWOL.
We visit the Brooke frequently and congratulate them on their newly opened centre in Luxor. Pictured here are, from left to right, Graham, Dr Mustafa, Pauline and Sabine. At the new centre the Brooke offer free medical attention and washing facilities to horses and donkeys.
It is excellent news for the animals to have this addition to animal care in Luxor whilst just over 16 kilometres away on the other side of the river Nile at El Marise the people's needs are quite different. AWOL works at preventative animal care by education and correction of bad tack on horses and donkeys as well as care of their cats and dogs. Only a few days ago we visited the Brooke again and Dr Amin was able to advise us and we will continue to keep in contact in order to ensure that we all do our very best for the animals.
Please become part of the team.
Now AWOL needs to build its medical centre please start a monthly donation of £10 in order to make a real difference to the welfare of the animals and allow us to plan further ahead.
