October 2007 Newsletter - Animal Welfare of Luxor - Egypt

On the 30th September, just too late for our last AWOL newsletter, Jan, her daughter Amy and Amy's friend Chloe all took part in a sponsored swim to raise funds and awareness of Animal Welfare of Luxor. Jan completed 50 lengths, Amy 60 and Chloe 94 raising an amazing £364. A couple of weeks later AWOL supporter Jane did her own sponsored swim and raised a further amazing £160 for AWOL. This along with other fundraising efforts by our supporters is getting us closer to our target of £5000 in order to evolve from a voluntary organisation into a full charity with a small centre so that we can do so much more for the animals. Congratulations and a big pat on the back to you all.

Our regional supporters are working hard to come up with fundraising ideas so if you would like to be part of the team or have any fundraising ideas do contact Jan and she will put you in touch with like minded people. Who said that fundraising couldn't be fun, at times hard, but always very rewarding.

E-Mails

If for any reason you have not had a reply to your e-mail please e-mail us again or do give Jan a call. We always reply to every e-mail we receive as we value your questions and support but we appear to have failed to receive several messages recently. Please accept our apologies if this has happened to you.

AWOL Pictures Page

On the AWOL pictures page this month we have focused on youngsters and their animals, mainly puppies. Though we have seen so many donkeys and horses throughout the month as is usual we thought you would like to see another side to the work of Animal Welfare of Luxor.

Puppies are frequently taken away from their mother far too soon and all too often are full of ticks, fleas and lice. Removing these can take a considerable amount of time but after the initial squeals of the children they begin to help and understand what needs to be done in order that their puppy is more relaxed, doesn't scratch all the time and can actually get some sleep. This early education in animal care is to some degree working, but we do have the language barrier to contend with and the fact that outside of the main tourist area of Luxor the farming families are very poor so it can be difficult for them to feed an animal well that doesn't bring in any income.

Puppies here are treated very much like a toy and most often owned by a small boy who has no idea of the puppies needs and usually has no way of providing the food for it to grow into a healthy dog. We explain their needs and how to feed, hold and look after them properly. Hopefully by the time the child takes over the family donkey or horse cart the caring will be there so that the animal's already hard workload is not added to by ignorance of basic animal care.

A Positive Puppy

We first saw the puppy pictured here, now happily playing with Pauline, a week before when he had just been rescued by an Egyptian family in Armant. We received a call for help so made a special journey and with assistance from a local schoolteacher we found the family and the puppy. It was in a dreadful state, malnourished, losing his fur, very afraid and with ticks and fleas.

We spent some time gaining his confidence. Time was not an issue here as it was vitally important to reduce his stress level before giving him a medical wash to kill the fleas, a good comb and removal of ticks. We always do all that we can but as this family already have a dog, 2 cats and 2 rabbits as pets and they are all well looked after we knew this puppy would have a good home. He didn't have the energy to fight but was quite relaxed so a gentle wash and lots of hugs before removing his dead fur which combed out quite easily. We didn't take a photograph at this time as we were too concerned for the puppy and also we don't like distressing pictures but just 5 days later after having what we consider to be his final regular wash and groom he is full of life, into everything and doing all that a puppy should.

We will have a better picture next month so you can see his progress but his coat is already growing as is his tummy!

Please become part of the team.

We thank you ALL for your support but must ask if you, or any of your friends, can support our work with a monthly donation of just £10 in order to make such a difference to the welfare of the animals and allow us to plan further ahead.
