We wish you all a very Happy New Year and hope that together we can make it a better year for the animals of the west bank of Luxor.
Last month we focused the AWOL Newsletter on replacing bad head collars with good ones which is making such a difference to so many donkeys and even a few horses. We are all heartened to see how quickly the injuries heal but needless to say we still have a long way to go.
It is important to note that AWOL never gives out free tack, we replace bad or harmful tack, free of charge, with tack that AWOL has made from locally purchased items. We consider that by making tack locally and finishing it in front of the owner and onlookers that they will gradually learn how to replace and repair their own tack which will benefit animals on into the future. So along with the usual assortment of problems that require our attention we continue to make head collars and have featured it again on our pictures page this month.
AWOL Centre El Marise
Though we are really making a difference to animal welfare and treating many problems we are seeing all too many cases that need more attention than we can give from the back of a car. AWOL needs just a small centre to work from with a permanent vet in order that we can do our very best for the animals.
Early in December our lawyer had a meeting in Cairo about the land for the AWOL centre at El Marise and the day before his wedding on the 15th he had a long meeting at the land and was very upbeat but frustratingly we are still waiting for that elusive final signature.
AWOL London to Brighton
We thank all our supporters as without you there would be no AWOL but we would like to take this opportunity to wish Terry Kilty, a student and supporter of AWOL from Merrist Wood College in Surrey, all the very best with his sponsored walk from London to Brighton on 25 January which will be approximately 54 miles.
It is an amazing undertaking, particularly at this cold time of year. We all wish him the best of luck, and please do contact Jan if you would like to pledge any money for Terry, or if you would like to have a sponsor form, to collect sponsors for him, or can offer any publicity or support. Many thanks.
Please become part of the team.
