Medamud is approximately 5 kilometres to the north of Luxor.
The temple at Medamud is dedicated to the Falcon headed god Montu.
This is the main area of the temple of Montu at Medamud with an avenue of sphinxes on the far side that would have in ancient times reached from Medamud right back to Luxor. |

The original temple on this site at Medamud predates that of the entire Karnak complex but the remains we see today are from a more recent temple built during the time of Greek rule. |

Medamud temple is 5 kilometres to the north of Luxor yet it dedicated to the falcon headed god Montu whose cult centre was at Armant which is to the south of Luxor. Both Armant and Medamud predate Luxor.
Montu gradually lost position to the ancient god Amun. |

Here we look back to where the first picture
was taken. The remains of a hypostyle hall can clearly be seen on
the left. The hall on the right can be seen more clearly in the
next picture. |
Slightly to the right of the previous picture the large hall in the centre of the picture leads out to the avenue of sphinxes. |
It is thought that this avenue of sphinxes runs all the way from Medamud to Karnak Temple 5 kilometres away.
Within the Karnak temple complex, on the north side is another temple dedicated to the ancient god, Montu as are the temples at Armant and Tod. |
