Looking back at May 2011

May is birthday month for us with Graham's on the 3rd and Pauline's on the 23rd. We had a wonderful day on the 3rd as we went to the tombs of Menna and Nakht in the Theban hills. They are not royal tombs but tombs of the nobel's and are two of the highest tombs open in the hills so it was great that we were allowed to take the car right up to the entrance of Menna and then afterwards down a short way to Nakht.

They are both small but very special tombs and we hadn't visited Menna since it was reopened after a full restoration and it is stunning. The new lighting system brings the wall paintings to life and what life as these tombs are real works of art and offer a freedom of expression that we have not found elsewhere. Being the only "tourists" we had all the time in the world to admire.

After Menna entering the tomb of Nakht is nowhere near as impressive with its dusty glass panels and old fashioned strip lighting but once your eyes adjust there are some wonderful scenes including the very well known banquet in which are the three female musicians that appear so frequently in books, on postcards and oh so many souvenirs.

We forced ourselves to have a cold drink at the Rammeasum Cafe before heading home for Pauline's pasta and a bottle of Omar Khayyam. A totally perfect day.

Friends know that for personal reasons Pauline celebrates her birthday on the 24th rather than the 23rd. Pauline wanted a quiet day at home and that is what we had with our family, a Stella and a few games of Scrabble. It was lovely and relaxing.

Late last month we found the perfect floor tiles for the roof so we arranged for the man who does the tiling to come to the villa and it took a week of hard work for him and several workers to get them all in place. We also bought enough tiles for the inside of the roof toilet so we had it all done at once. It looks really nice and finishes our house off. We just have the finishing jobs to do which includes the wood for the seats and it will all be complete.

We had a really special evening with Di, Alan and Kath at the Steinberger Italian restaurant for which we thank them. It was such a treat to be spoiled for the evening as it is rare that we go to any hotel.

It has been a busy month what with our usual AWOL duties and the added worry of building the AWOL Centre but with so many friends over it has also been most enjoyable.
