Looking back at June 2011
It goes without saying that it is so very hot here now though not as hot as the same time last year. Liking the heat we are both very happy but also a little sad that all our visitors have now been and gone and we don't expect to see many friends apart from Simon and Chantal until the Autumn.

Luxor arabic is a language that relies as much on where and who you are as to what you say. For instance if a lady uses the arabic word "silk" it would be expected that she wanted an Egyptian Brillo pad or some steel wool. A man asking would be likely to want electric cable so what you ask for and what you get depends on what the shop assistant sees before them. Graham went into the pharmacy wanting a repeat of the sports spray that I use on my arm. He asked for it in broken arabic but he could not make them understand. They even offered fly spray. Once home he took a photo of the old can with the camera on his mobile phone and went back the next day. He showed the same young lady the picture and she said that that is what she thought that he had asked for but couldn't believe that he wanted something for a sports injury. He couldn't imagine why!!!!
The building of the AWOL Centre continues and it now looks like a building but we still have some way to go and lots of funds to raise but Jan and the AWOL team are doing a great job over in the UK. There are many fundraising events which are on the AWOL Notice Board so do go and say hi to Jan and help AWOL if you can.
We have made slow progress on finishing off the stairs and roof seating areas but this has more to do with a lack of energy than the heat as well as Graham spending a lot of time going through the final rewrite of his book. It is amazing just how much time it takes but at just over one hundred thousand words there is a lot to go through. He then has another book to write so it is an ongoing project but it is nice to see him happy in his writing. He still ensures that AWOL head collars and all the other bits and pieces that we need for the animals take precedence though. I love being out in the villages with the animals and people but by Thursday I am more than ready for Friday at home.
If you are coming to Luxor do let us know as it is always nice to meet up when you are here. With fewer visitors in the hot months we can usually arrange to meet at this time of year and we can chat about Animal Welfare of Luxor, what there is to see and do here, what it is like to live here and generally just say hi. Do Click Here and print off the page that opens which has our phone numbers and also full details of where we can meet. If you have a corner spare in your suitcase please Click Here to see a few items that we would love you to bring over.
