What are the Theban Tombs?

Please use these drop down lists to quickly
find the tomb you are looking for

This is a range of well over 400 tombs on the West Bank of Luxor between the workers village of Deir El-Medina, at the southern end, running northwards for just over three kilometres to Dra Abu Al-Naga.

These Theban tombs encompass the Tombs of the Nobles - Scribes, Governors, Mayors and others that held high office, many of which had frequent direct, day to day, contact with the Pharaoh. The rest of the Theban tombs are those of the workers at Deir El-Medina - the workers village - who built the tombs for the Pharaohs but in their spare time built tombs for themselves.

The Theban Tombs are all given the prefix TT. and they are mostly numbered in the sequence they were found so the higher the number the more recent they were discovered but there are a couple of exceptions. There are well over four hundred tombs of the nobles with around twenty five of them open to the public. Some of the Theban Tombs are quite amazing whilst others have been lost forever. When you buy tickets they grant you access to one, two or three specific tombs. We have grouped the tombs below to match the entrance tickets.

There are many other tombs further up and down the Nile on both the east and west bank such as the tomb of Ankhtifi.
